[Los Angeles, California, March 18-21] The Delta Zeta Theta Rho chapter at California State University, Los Angeles participated in the brothers of Sigma Alpha Epsilon Paddy Murphy Week. Although this week is celebrated through all the chapters of SAE, this was the Phi Alpha Chapter’s first time hosting it on campus. The week long series of events was to raise money for their national philanthropy, Children’s Miracle Network and the competitors included other Panhellenic sororities on the CSULA campus.
Paddy Murphy Week started from the tale of Paddy Murphy which is SAE’s famous fraternal legend that became a symbol of the fraternities everlasting brotherhood. The brothers of Phi Alpha gave us some history of this story in our weekly chapter meetings along with the activities that were planned throughout the week.
To start off the Paddy Murphy activities, Tuesday’s event showcased a coffin art piece that each Panhellenic sorority designed for their chapter. The coffins were located on the campus main walkway with donation buckets and photos were also posted to Phi Alpha’s social media. Each like that the photo received equaled a penny, and the chapter with the most change at the end of the competition would win. All proceeds were donated to their national philanthropy, the Children’s Miracle Network. Delta Zeta won this half of the competition.
The next event was the dodgeball competition where different greek organizations made teams and dodged for a cause. Our sisters either showed their support by playing or cheering on the sidelines. We excitedly took another win for the week.
The final event was the heavily anticipated “Miss Minerva Pageant”. Theta Rho President, Estefania Aguirre, and her little sister, Brittany Tremblay, both participated in the final event that took place on Friday. Both sisters had to answer questions about themselves and perform a talent. Estephania signed to a song and Brittney read a poem. Both sisters did absolutely amazing. Our president took home the first place prize and was crowned Miss Minerva. At the end of the night, Delta Zeta took home a plaque for the Paddy Murphy Coffin Design Contest for raising the most money. That night was a major win for our chapter and we are so grateful to have taken part in their philanthropy week.
Throughout the week, the Theta Rho chapter raised an impressive $200+ out of $750 raised for the Children’s Miracle Network that 100% of the proceeds will be going to. With an unwavering dedication for the cause throughout the week, the chapter took the crown and President Estefania Aguirre was so ecstatic about this achievement.
“On March 21st, I competed in SAE’s first ever Miss Minerva Pageant. The event was put on to raise money for the Children’s Miracle Network which would directly benefit the Children’s Hospital LA. For the pageant, I had to showcase a talent of mine and I chose to perform the song Mr. Brightside by The Killers in American Sign Language. I chose this talent because I’ve been studying Deaf culture and ASL for many years and any chance I can bring awareness to it, I take advantage of. Also, Delta Zeta’s national philanthropy is Speech and Hearing so I thought it would fun to tie the two together and be able to represent Delta Zeta in every way I can. I ended up winning the pageant and earning the title of Miss Minerva and it was the best moment I could’ve asked for. I was so happy that not only did I get to make my sisters proud, but I also got to do it in honor of such an amazing cause for the kids!”
Theta Rho feels very accomplished in all the work they put into that week and really showed what our sisterhood is all about. We are very proud of what we put forward and will continue to let our drive to help others move us forward with other future philanthropy events with all greek organizations on campus. Collaborating with other organizations, like Sigma Alpha Epsilon, is a nice way to support other philanthropies. In the end, it is times like these that make our sisterhood stronger than ever.
