[Los Angeles, California, March 15] The Delta Zeta Theta Rho chapter at California State University, Los Angeles teamed up with the brothers of Sigma Nu and participated in this year’s “Sigma Nu: NU Games”. The week long series of events was hosted by the Sigma Nu Eta Phi Chapter, and the competitors included other Panhellenic sororities on the CSULA campus.
Coinciding with the 2018 Winter Olympics, Sigma Nu chose the theme of, ‘NU Games US Open 2018’. Each day of the week was dedicated to different challenges that would gain each opponent points, and at the end of the week, the organization with the most points would win. The proceeds would go to Sigma Nu’s philanthropy, St. Jude’s Children Hospital, but the winner would receive 40% of the proceeds to go towards their own organization. Our Vice President of Philanthropy, Diana Garcia, was in constant contact with the brothers who were our ‘coaches’ during the week of the games, and together they planned successful activities for each of the events.
To start off the games, Monday’s event was a collaboration of “Pin a Heart for St. Jude” and “Pie a Nu”. Competitors were tasked with selling as many $1 heart grams as possible so they could be pinned on a board. The more hearts team earned the more points were awarded. To end the day, each team was encouraged to pie a brother for extra points for $2 each. Tuesday’s event was a lip-sync dance battle where teams choreographed dances and their performances were judged by the audience. The next day was a relay race, which took place in a nearby park. During the final round on Thursday, each team held individual fundraisers with their product of choice on campus. Theta Rho sold tostilocos, a popular Mexican street food, and within no time everything had run out! The chapter also participated in Coin Wars, which was another part of the point system, during the tostiloco fundraiser.
Throughout the week, the Theta Rho chapter raised an impressive $479 plus an additional $100 gift for a total of $579 that will be put toward St. Jude. With an unwavering dedication for the cause throughout the week, the chapter took the crown during Friday’s award ceremony winning a trophy plus a check for 40% of the proceeds earned during Nu Games; a total of $600 that will be donated to Delta Zeta’s National Philanthropies this month.
“Being in the Nu Games was a good experience because I got to bond with sisters that I wasn’t close to and now we’re closer than ever,” shares a sister who participated in the lip-sync performance. “Also, it felt so good when we did our fundraiser and sold out so quickly. I would definitely do it again next year!”
Theta Rho’s Vice President of Philanthropy, Diana Garcia, put in a great amount of effort for the success of each event and says it is a time that she was proud to experience with her sisters, “…it was rewarding knowing that so many sisters came together throughout the week to participate in events for each day. Not only did we show our love for philanthropy by helping Sigma Nu raise $1,500 for St. Jude, but our sisterhood bloomed as we were all there participating and supporting one another”.
Collaborating with other organizations, like Sigma Nu, is a nice way to support other philanthropies. In the end, it is times like these that make our sisterhood stronger than ever.
