SPEECH & HEARING

As a national organization, Delta Zeta has passionately supported the cause of speech and hearing since 1954. Our mission is to promote speech and hearing awareness through partnerships with national organizations, fundraising that provides hearing aids to non-hearing individuals, and working with programs aimed at preventing hearing loss.

THE STARKEY HEARING FOUNDATION

Life is made up of sharing ideas, dreams and goals. Hearing is vital to that. Giving one person the gift of hearing may seem like a small act of kindness, but it has a compounding effect on the future of our world.  The Starkey Hearing Foundation does all of this, and Theta Rho supports their endeavors. Our 2nd annual Hike For Hearing philanthropy event, helped raise over $2,000 for those who are not able to hear.

GALLAUDET

UNIVERSITY

Delta Zeta Sorority shares a partnership with Gallaudet. University, located in Washington, District of Columbia. The university leads advances in education of deaf and hard of hearing students and deaf rights worldwide. Today, students from across the United States and more than 25 countries-diverse in perspective, backgrounds, interests and communication styles-form an exciting learning community as they prepare for dynamic careers and a lifetime of growth. It is the world's only university designed to be barrier-free for deaf and

hard of hearing students.

HEART

FOR HEARING

In 2015, Delta Zeta made a goal to raise $5,000,000 for the Starkey Hearing Foundation with the motivation to open speech clinics around the globe for those who have just been given the gift of hearing. This pledge is now what we call Heart for Hearing.

As a chapter, Theta Rho hosts our annual Hike or Hoops for Hearing (newly implemented since 2018) walk-a-thon or basketball tournament event as well as various fundraisers such as Hotdogs for Hearing in order to raise money that goes towards Heart for Hearing.

LISTEN CAREFULLY

The Listen Carefully campaign is another way that the Starkey Hearing Foundation creates awareness for those who need help hearing. Currently 1 in 6 American teens have noise-induced hearing loss from loud sounds. This is a public health threat, and as part of their campaign, the women of Delta Zeta wrote down some reasons why they listen and why we treasure this gift of hearing.

THE

PAINTED TURTLE CAMP

The Painted Turtle Camp seeks to reach beyond illness, to inspire children with life-threatening diseases to become their greater selves. It is our mission to provide a year-round, life-changing environment for these children and their families.  Located just outside of Los Angeles, Theta Rho sisters are given the opportunity to volunteer at the  camp through service projects and by becoming the children’s camp counselors.
